Sandblasted glass, brieze blocks, paint, directional light 2008

25 x 45 x 65cm (approx)

Exhibited in 'An Invisible Sun Within Us', Warehouse, Norfolk,

curated by Dominique Rey.

The structure is a three-dimensional representation of a plan depicting the layout of an ancient Persian garden. These 'chahar bagh' or four-quartered gardens were created as reflections of paradise on earth. The glass is sandblasted with floral designs taken from old Persian textiles, and with an excerpt from a poem by female writer Forough Farrokhzad. The contrast of flowing, vegetal design and the geometric and architectural is a central component in much Islamic historic Persian art.
